If It Acts Like A Drunk And Smells Like A Dog ……….. Then It Has To Be A Drunk

It appears that the Detroit Tigers problems continue to no avail with their All Star —– Miguel Cabrera and his off the field antics. Cabrera having charged with DUI and domestic violence underwent rehab and was welcomed back within the Tigers’ organization . Coach Jim Leyland and team GM Dave Dombrowski have mustered all the strength that they have not to have the player traded away but given the stakes involved they thought it more prudent to retain the player whose statistics within the league have been amongst the very best in (MLB) ( baseball) over the last five years .

It goes without saying that the Detroit Tigers have been something of a disappointment in recent years within the AL Central having to compete against the Minnesota Twins , Chicago White Sox , and Cleveland Indians . But it has been the fact that this Tigers’ team has shown remarkable inconsistency in not competing as many believe that they can . Team owner Michael Illitch long ambitious as an owner having won multiple Stanley Cups with perhaps the NHL’s most heralded sport’s franchise the Detroit Red Wings . Illitch wants to win and win big because it has now become an anathema to this business entrepreneur . With the Tigers not having won a World Series under Leyland’s career it has to be said that the team has become something of a major disappointment to the fans in attendance at Comerica Park who’ve longed wait to see another title come to this heralded ballclub .

Miguel Cabrera for his part is now under even closer public scrutiny with a second indictment having just been adjoined to his record . Driving in Southern Florida recently the player was stopped by a law enforcement officer believing he’d been driving under the influence and excessive speeding on a major Florida highway. The player failed a field sobriety test and it is believed that he blew a .014 bac (blood alcohol content) (above the state legal level of .08) which break that state’s legal limit. The player had undergone rehab and anger management for his prior act with the assistance from the MLBPA (union) but it appears that Cabrera still can’t escape the fact that he has a problem and that is that he’s an acute alcoholic and in doing so he’s a detriment to his family and that of the Detroit Tigers’ organization . But in reality the real problem facing the organization is that beyond Miguel Carbera there isn’t really a great deal for which one could look admiringly at the team . They’ve tied their sails to the mast that is the first baseman and now they have a very serious image problem from a player who’s viewed as the face of the ballclub . And no amount of empathy sought can hide the fact that the player has now become a major distraction and a problem for not only Leyland’s coaching staff but also for the ambition of the organization as a whole .

Cabrera was signed to a seven year $119 million dollar contract for which he’s still owed $68 million and one seriously doubts that there’d be any takers by a team at this juncture, for a player who has an alcohol and anger management problem. As productive as Miguel Cabrera has proven to be over the course of his career he’s now become that while prolific in his professional life , he’s become a mindless and pathetic individual in his private life ! He’s a danger to himself , his wife , his kids and to the public . Had he be involved in a vehicular accident one simply wonders whether or not he’d have been willing to be held accountable for his actions ? Because that clearly wasn’t the case with NFL player Donte’ Stallworth and his vehicular accident where a pedestrian in South Florida on a crosswalk was killed while he’d (Stallworth) been driving under the influence (DUI- bac .014 —-marijuana ) and narcotics. The pedestrian a 51 year old maintenance worker with was killed on the crosswalk and where his body had been dragged some sixty feet after it had been hit by Stallworth’s $175,000 Diamler-Benz. And as we know the player served only a mere 24 day sentence in a Florida state prison in a plea agreement with Miami Dade County DA Katherine Fernandez-Rundle . The justice system has become skewered and a pale parody of what it’s meant to truly represent.

While I feel that the upcoming MLB season ought to be very thrilling for the fans in attendance. I’m hoping to see the season be a truly competitive one and also see whether or not the San Francisco Giants can prove last season’s triumph in the World Series wasn’t a fluke and that they can make a serious run at possibly successfully defending their title. This much I think that we can all agree upon the big money moves made by such teams as the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies have been made the pre-emptive favorites for the game’s showcase event. No doubt New York Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman and the organization will be surely looking to make that envisaged scenario merely one that’s played out in the minds of the believers than that of reality.

The New York Yankees may well be hard pressed to even challenge the Red Sox within the AL East as they’re not considered favorably as a team to even win the division much less garner the wildcard berth within the AL.

The Detroit Tigers’ season will be predicated upon their pitching and off course their offense and how they respond throughout the season. Are they capable of competing successfully within the division as well as the rest of baseball remains to be seen . But I for one view this season as being more of a reclamation project not only for Mige Cabretra but also for that of the Tigers if they’re to be viewed a success. If that fails to happen then there’s liable to be a major upheaval within the organization initiated by GM Dave Dombrowski and team owner Michael Illitch. This much we do know for a ballclub that’s steeped in history this franchise has fallen on hard times struggling to maintain a sense of urgency and purpose . At the same time Miguel Cabrera has to prove to not only the Tigers’ fans but also fans of the game in general that that he’s simply not become a self absorbed player and constant drunk. He has to once again become the player we know him capable of being and leader of this team if the Tigers are to have any semblance of success this upcoming season.

As to what fate has in hand for the game of baseball this upcoming year one can only hope that the off the field issues that we’re now seeing within the NBA and NFL won’t be something that we’ll see within the game of baseball. The real problem the game faces is that it’s hierarchy , owners and the union (MLBPA) are completely oblivious as to the acute financial issues that the game now faces . Commissioner Bud Selig acts like an ostrich with his buried in the sand looking for the sun to shine on his proverbial ass . Unfortunately Selig’s intelligence much like everything else about him isn’t shown with the public statement he makes but with the sheer idiocy of his actions during his tenure as the game’s highest ranking official. And to think that he’s been compensated to the tune of in excess of $65 million over the last four years for a position that a chimpanzee could have filled ! Let’s just hope that the homosapiens out there aren’t offended by the statement but in reality I doubt that they’re not discouraged that they’ve been compared to an imbecile like Bud Selig .

What thoughts if any do you have concerning Miguel Cabrera’s current situation and that of the Detroit Lions’ upcoming season ? Do you believe that this was a mere mistake by the player but merely his self indulgent and absorbed attitude that once again threatens his career ? Simply chime in with your thoughts on this matter and any other that you feel that’s now pertinent to the game of baseball ? By all means chime in with your thoughts on the subject and as always thanks for the continued support !

And The Survey Says …………..

And    The  Survey Says  ………………..

Well  once  again   it’d  appear  that   the  Philadelphia  Eagles  and   their  Pro Bowl  quarterback  Donovan McNabb  may   be  coming to  an  impasse.  With  McNabb  seeking  an  extension  to  his  contract , the  player  has  also   made  it   clear  that   he’d  also   like  to  see  what   direction  that    they’re  apparently   going  in.    In  particular   when  it  comes  to   strengthening   the  roster.

For  the  last   two   years   the   team  has   been   underserved   in  terms  of  its   receiving   corps  and  the   lack  of   a  real   running  game.  Owner   Jeffey  Lurie  and   General  Manager  Joe  Banner   haven’t  exactly   been forthcoming   when  it  comes  to  putting  a  competitive  team  on  the  field  of  play. Looking     primarily at   McNabb  and   Brian  Westbrook   this   team   lives  and   dies   by  the   performance    of  their   aging   veterans.  And  but   for  their   defense   it   has  to  be  said   that   there   isn’t   much  to  this   team  athletically   or   competitively.

Coach  Andy  Reid  has  been  through   his  own  torrent  of   emotions  with  the  Eagles   on   and   off  the  field. And  the  toll  that  it  has   taken  on  him   emotionally   could  well  be  leading   him   to  make  a  decision    that   has  been   long  overdue.    If  nothing   else   this  last   season  he  was  able  to  perhaps  pull  of   his  best   coaching   accomplishment   in  years.    Making  lemonade  out   of  let’s   just   say  sour  lemons   was  quite  astonishing  when  one   considers  the  season  that   the  team  had.

They’d  been  left   for  dead   for   sure   and  managed   to   come  back   from  the  abyss  to  make  it  all  the  way   to  the  NFC  championship  game.  There  they’d   fall  to   the  unlikely  Arizona  Cardinals.   The   game   itself   basically  sealed  the  Eagles’  fate   for  the   season  and  any   postseason  ambitions  that  they  had.  If nothing  else   it  proves   that   the  franchise   was  capable  of  facing   adversity  head  on.   But  when  it came  to  that  final   push  it  was  clearly   beyond   them.

Philadelphia   Eagles’  fans  are   loyal   to  a  fault.   But   at the  end  of  the  day  there’s  only   so  much  that  they  can  bare.    And  it  can’t   have   escaped  anyone’s  notice  that   went  things   aren’t   going   right   for  the   franchise   they   the   fans   tend  to  let   their   emotions  run  away  with  them.   And  in  doing   so  they   tend to  go  overboard   when  it  comes  to  voicing     either   approval or   disapproval  as   to   where  the  franchise  is  going  or  what  it  is  that  they’ve   achieved.

Philadelphia Eagles' GM Joe Banner . Of late Banner has been under pressure to improve the roster of the franchise. And his veteran quarterback McNabb has let it be known that he's not yet prepared to sign a new contract until he's seen what improvements are made by the organization. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ David Hirschfield ................
Eagles' GM Joe Banner of late has been under a great deal of pressure to improve the team's roster. Under no illusions Banner knows that it's now or never for the franchise as a whole. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ David Hirschfield ......................

It   has  to  be  said  that  when   it was  announced    that   McNabb   had  been  drafted  by  the  franchise.   His   arrival    was  accepted  with  all  the  fervor   of   a  group  who’d  thought   that   they’d   been   betrayed   by  an  ownership  and  management  who  clearly  didn’t   know what  the  hell  it was  that  they  were  doing.  McNabb  through   the  ensuing    years   has  proven to  the  fans   that   he  could   lead   the  franchise.  Albeit   that   his   leadership   skills   have   come  into   question  repeatedly  over   the    years.   In-fighting   and   very  little  real   communication   or  leadership   has  all  but   led   this   franchise  to  implode.     Self   indulgent    behavior   and   no  one  is   prepared  to   held   accountable  for  their   actions.   And   one   could   see  that   in  Andy   Reid ,  here   was  a  coach   who’d   all  but  lost   the   team  when  it  really  mattered.  Confidence   in them  may   well   have   been  the   real   issue.

If  the  quarterback’s   demands  aren’t   met   then   it   has  to  be  said  the    team  has   to   move   in a  completely  new   direction  altogether.    Contract  extension  or   not  this   team   has   progressively    either  made it  to  the   top  of  the  mountain.   But   then  all   too   quickly  fallen  off   the  summit    inexplicably  without   a  reason  as  to   its   shortcomings.    It   were  as  if   it’s    half    expected  to  be  that   way,  season  in,  season   out    for  the  franchise.   Mediocrity  and    the   contrivance  that   as  long   as  they   defeat  the   Dallas   Cowboys  and  the New York  Giants during  the   regular   season   that  is  enough   for  the  team   in  terms  of  success.

If   we’re   going  to   question  the   actions   as  to   what    McNabb  is  after then  we’ve  also   got  to  look  at   whether    or  not  what  he’s   trying  to   achieve  is  actually  worthwhile.    In  the  past   he’s   made  this   type  of   request   before .   He    got   his   wish    when  the   team  made  the   trade   for  the  often   troubled,  talented  and   mercurial  Terrell  Owens.   Not   quite   a  match  made   in  heaven.    But   it  proved   profitable  in  the   fact that   it  took  them  to  the  Promised Land   by  way  of a    Superbowl  appearance.   However   in   the    aftermath  of  the    loss  to  the  New  England  Patriots .     It   soured   the   relationship   between  the  two   players   and   we   were  left   wondering    who  of   the    two   may   well  have  been  the  more   immature  ?    Name  calling  and   other   such   child  like   tendencies  and   it   has  to  be  said   watching  the  events  that’ve   unfolded   in  Philadelphia    has  been   akin   to  watching   a    daytime   soap  opera.  Only   in   this   case   there’s   no sex   ,  murder   or   hint  of    the  questioning   of  a  cast member’s   sexuality.   There   may   well   have   been  Owens   questioning   McNabb’s   intestinal   fortitude    at  the   end  of  the   game  itself  .  But   that   was  then   and  this   is   now.    And   it’d  appear    that   it’s   the  player   who’s   now   questioning  the   resolve  of   the  franchise   and  its  overall   ambition.

And   should   the  unthinkable   happen   and  they   seek  a   parting  of  the  ways.   Then   I’d   like  to  think   that    both  parties  will    have  thought   this   out    thoroughly .    It’s   not as  if    McNabb   can’t   survive   without    Philadelphia.  The   question   is   however  can   the  Philadelphia   Eagles    survive   without  Donovan  McNabb  ?.    Because  if  anything   the   fans   before  McNabb   didn’t  really    have   all  that   much  to   really   cheer about   as  to  their    fortunes.    Now   in  the  wake  of  what   could   be  a   monumental   mistake.   I   doubt   that  they’re   going   to   like    the   view   of   someone   else   helming  this   team.     McNabb   may   well  be   testing  that  resolve  or   he   may   well    be   looking  to    maneuver   his  way   out   of  Philly.    But  in  reality    should    push    come  to   shove  ,   someone  if  not   both   parties   will  be   looking   to   profit   from  this   all.      The  question  is   who   at  this  present    moment  in  time   has  the  upper   hand   in  this   all  ?

GM For A Day Or Any Period of Time Who’d Want To Be ……?

As much as I like sports there are times  when I’m completely at a loss to explain how and why it is that the executives  act the  way that they do ?  In hiring a GM a franchise looks to have an executive to oversee the behind the closed door operations of  a sports entity. We’ve seen some successful ones from the likes of Scott Pioli of the New England Patriots, Dave Dombrowski of the Detroit Tigers, Ken Williams of the Chicago White Sox and Brian Cashman of  the New York  Yankees.    What these executives have in common are that they’ve  each  had  success  in  their chosen field.

Though as¬† of late it’s been widely rumored that Pioli will be leaving¬† the franchise for pastures green.¬† picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Dan Foster …………………..

In reality however  who’d really  want to be the point man for a franchise ?  Where at  every press conference  you’re the one  who becomes the  voice  and  reason when  the  franchise may well be  in trouble .  Be  it a  player ,  a coach  or  even the owner  themselves.  These are  the guys  who become the face of  the franchise at  these  most sensitive of  times.

Recently however we saw  where  then coach Romeo Crennel  was fired by the  Cleveland Browns. Prior to Crennel’s loss of employment  the  GM in place  Phil  Savage  was let go by the team. Merely done one would  believe  because of the sheer  lack of  success by the team. And when it comes to success  a franchise is judged by  its team first and  then the  coach, manager and lastly the  General Manager.  These men and in some  cases women  are  recently a hot commodity when they’re  at  a premium.

A good GM can earn in  excess of  $5m a year  and upwards .  And it’s not unheard in some cases  it can be an astronomical  sum. Suffice to say these  guys aren’t exactly  crying  and asking  where their next meal will be coming from. But to those who  aspire to hold such a  position within a franchise  they’re very  much  the  Chief  Executive Officer and they hold sway over  the owner. PR has to be part of their DNA when dealing  with the press and  public alike.  And  it says a lot as to their  communication skills  when they’re  able to have the press eating  out of  their hands  even  when  the  subject matter  is indeed a sensitive one.

When a sensitive matter  come to light  where it becomes  a staple of the  tabloids  then it’s very  much up to the GM to keep the  press at bay  while  the franchise has to  deal with the problem from within.  For the New  York Giants  this  had to be the  case  when the  Plaxico Burress  episode  came to  light and was  very  much the  press’  raison de etre’.  And as litigious as  society has now  become.  It can only be said  that  it also  helps  if they’ve  also got  a  legal  background behind  them. It may well  be one  of the  most desired  positions  within a sport’s  franchise.  But I  for one  wouldn’t  relish being  the  focus  of  such  unwanted  attention even if  only  briefly.

So for now let’s just see how these  individuals will  suffice  over their  tenure at the  top of the  food  chain. Much  like the  execs at the top of a multi billion dollar  enterprise  these men  are  placed  under  a great deal of pressure  to make  the right  sort of    decisions  that’ll  go a long way  in defining  a franchise and  the  ultimate  direction that it heads in.
