Well It’s Crunch Time And It’s Time To Man Up ……….

Well It’s Crunch Time And It’s Time To Man Up ……..

It’s crunch time in the NBA and a number of teams are scurrying to play themselves into contention in terms of a playoff berth. As an avid San Antonio Spurs supporter I’ve begun to realize that the season has begun to unravel faster than a ball of twine. The moment I heard that the team’s point guard Tony Parker had broken his right wrist , the season was all but over. Now all I can envisage for the team is to see them make another unaccustomed and unceremonious bow out, as they may well fail and fall at the fist hurdle in the playoffs.

Without Parker alongside Manu Ginobli and Tim Duncan , the team essentially becomes a mere shadow of itself. And while the acquisition of Richard Jefferson was meant to further assist the team from the offensive side of things and also to add as a buffer on the defense. It appears that Jefferson has been slow to acclimatize himself to Gregg Popovich’s system. Never mind the fact that Jefferson seems to be a mere shadow of the explosive player that he once was when he played for the New Jersey Nets .

If there’s to be any hope of a good showing by the team in the playoffs then it’ll be incumbent upon Duncan and Ginobli to lead by example . And then hopefully the other players and in particular the younger players on the roster will follow their lead. We’ve seen the gradual progression in the play of George Hill and DeJuan Blair . But that by itself, simply won’t be enough to make the team a real threat in the postseason. It is going to take a monumental effort on the part of the Spurs to make it to at least the Western Conference semi-finals. For me that would be a realistic target for the organization as it now stands. Fortune smiles on the brave and this team, when put to the test has shown what they’re capable of .

Now strange as it seems within the Eastern Conference.It now appears that the three most prominent teams within the conference may well be in for something of a dogfight. What at first may well have seemed clear cut now looks as if it could end up being somewhat of a suspense thriller in the making. The Cleveland Cavaliers may well be the presumptive favorites to come out of the conference . And in LeBron James at present , we might just being seeing the ‘nascent era’ of the player , as he and his teammates look to land the franchise their first NBA title.

Looking to stop the Cavaliers in their tracks are the Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic . The surprise here , may well be the Atlanta Hawks, as I seriously doubt that most fans would envisage seeing this team with the third best mark within the conference. The Hawks simply have been playing some fundamentally sound basketball. And with that has come a great deal of confidence and the belief that they’re more than competing with and amongst the very best within NBA. And the Hawks’ fans have to be cautiously optimistic as to their chances in the postseason.

When I watch the Orlando Magic , I view them as something of an enigma. One minute they’re playing up to their potential and the next they’re playing down to the level of a lesser opponent . That’s not exactly the form you want to see coming from a team that many thought were in with a chance of dethroning the reigning NBA champions , the Los Angeles Lakers . And with if Dwight Howard is to be viewed as the best ‘big man’ in the league, then his game has to be more consistent on a ‘night in , night out basis’ . And unfortunately if that isn’t happening then we’re liable to see a more animated Stan Van Gundy on the sidelines.

In the Western Conference the Lakers have a 4 game lead over their nearest rivals in the conference standings. The Dallas Mavericks have been playing at a high level but each and every time I see this team . I merely view them as a unit that once the postseason comes around . They’re simply a traffic accident waiting to happen and they endanger themselves with their complete lack of mental and physical competitiveness. On paper this roster could be viewed as amongst the very best in the NBA. But the strange thing is , the team that is more of a danger to themselves than they are to others. While they may well make it to the conference semi finals , I seriously doubt that they’ll be capable of derailing the Los Angeles Lakers. The mental aspect of the Mavericks is susceptible and frail and it can be borne out by the fact that there isn’t someone who one could look at on the roster and view them as the vocal or physical leader of this team.

And based on last night’s performance against the Boston Celtics . I think it’s pretty much safe to say that the Mavericks are as close to be viewed as championship contender material , as Paris Hilton could be considered a candidate to become a Rhodes’ scholar at either Cambridge or Oxford University . This is a courtesy shout-out to both chappy 81 and sportschump , who are still enamored with the Mavericks, the way that a teenage boy would be with the center-spread of Playboy magazine.

Of the teams I view within the conference who I think could make it all the more difficult for the Lakers to make a return to the NBA Finals . It could very well the George Karl coached Denver Nuggets. With the play of Carmelo Anthony , Chauncey Billups and J. R. Smith all playing with a great deal of zeal. A conference finals between the Lakes and Nuggets could very well be one of the better conference finals of recent years. Pitting Kobe Bryant against Carmelo Anthony would make for a very engaging Western Conference Final. I can only surmise that it’d prove to be ‘a hit’ for the respective fans as well. But that would definitely be predicated upon both teams making their way through the playoffs and the appetite of a thrilling conference final.

As the regular season now winds down and with the postseason now about to get underway . It will be most interesting to see whether or not the scenarios I’ve envisaged will actually play itself out. It’s now ……”Well It’s Crunch Time And It’s Time To Man Up “ . Which teams will be the ones who will man up and which will the teams to fall by the wayside ?

This’ll Be One More Reason For The Brett Favre Saga To Be Further Perpetuated In The Offseason ………Oh Sh_t !

This’ll Be One More Reason For The Brett Favre Saga To Be Further Perpetuated In The Offseason ………Oh Sh_t !

If the widely varying reports are to be believed , then it may well be a certainty that former San Diego Chargers’ running back LaDainian Tomlinson will join the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent. Good God almighty , this’ll mean that the guys over at ESPN will be ejaculating like teens who’ve been watching far too much porn to make them all go blind. There goes the likes Mortensen , Schlereth , Jaworski , Hoge , Berman and Clayton shooting their load all of the studios of Bristol, Connecticut . I’d hate to think how this will make Pam Oliver and Linda Cohn feel about this all ! But they may well be just looking at it as just , boys being boys ?

An ad showing the attributes of ‘LT’ the player.

Things might have been looking up for the other teams in the NFC North . Especially when one considers how the Vikings wilted like gilded lillies in the NFC championship game (31-28) against the New Orleans Saints . Guys like Jared Allen and the rest of teammates were made to look rather ordinary. But as they say there’s no use crying over spilled milk is there Jared ? I guess he’s also still pi_sed that Obama made it into the White House ? Given Allens’ avowed support for the Republicans and his thinking that the Democrats would tax his ass off. Well, what’s an extra $125,000 to a guy who earned close to $15.5 million in 2009 ?

Tomlinson was wined and dined by the brass , ne’ front office staff of the Vikings , headed by owner Zygi Wilf and GM Rick Spielman . And today he’ll meet for the second time with Vikings’ coach Brad Childress and his coaching staff . All that’s now needed from the player is his ‘John Hancock’ on the dotted line of a contract. And he’ll immediately become the backup to Adrian Peterson . Let’s put this way , all bets are now off as to whether or not Brett Favre now returns to the team . I’d dare wager that not even Vegas is prepared to give you meaningful odds on that at all ? The outcome now seems inevitable and Brett will no doubt make his intentions known as and when it no doubt suits him.

And to think that many of us had been hoping for a peaceful offseason in the NFL ? But alas, we can live in hope that this whole scenario may well end up being something that’s indeed welcoming for us all. Well at least in the hope that this whole thing isn’t prolonged any longer than is necessary. Thankfully Favre isn’t a pregnant pachyderm because we’d still be waiting. But as of now there’s a chance that he’ll make his mind up and actually come to a decision. Now far be it for me to suggest that Brad Childress is an ass but why would he have made the statement that the team and organization are prepared to wait as long as it takes for Brett to come to a decision ? But as the old adage goes …….. a fool and their money are easily parted ‘ . And the fact that the Vikings would still be on the hook to Favre for $12 million , I can see why he would have made the statement.

For Tomlinson this may well give him one last legitimate shot at winning a Superbowl ring. Because as we know he came as close as he was ever going to get with the Chargers. Unfortunately for the player and the team the two obstacles in their way , were either the Indianapolis Colts or the New England Patriots . I don’t know how the Chargers’ fans may have felt about it all , having been so close but yet so far. Do they apportion the blame on the team or on Norv Turner , his coaching staff or quite possibly upon the shoulders of GM A. J. Smith ? Clearly they’ve a right to feel aggrieved and with the team now shedding Tomlinson as well as Antonio Cromartie and with a tender offer for Darren Sproles yet to be accepted by the player . One wonders what direction the organization is now heading in under Smith ? Their first priority may well be to retain Sproles but they may well seek to trade the player in order to possibly attain a first and third round pick for him. It’d free up cap space for them and afford them some flexibility in the draft and free agency. But it remains to be seen as to what steps may well be taken by the team as a whole.

While the NFC North may well become all the more competitive, with the possible acquisition of Tomlinson by the Vikings. One can’t ignore the moves made by the Chicago Bears , having signed Julius Peppers to a lucrative five year contract. The Bears are now looking to stock up and replenish their roster through free agency and the forthcoming draft. This will no doubt be a last ditch effort by Bears’ coach Lovie Smith to save his job. As the sword of Damocles still continues to hover over his head. With the Green Bay Packers steadily improving under Aaron Rogers . There’s every reason to believe that the division will now harbor a great deal more interest than usual amongst a majority of NFL fans. Sadly, as I alluded to earlier the guys of ESPN may well make it more about the decision of Brett Favre , rather than anything that has been done by the teams within the division. And knowing their zest for the dramatic they may well make the whole damn thing overshadow the NFL Draft altogether. You’ll note that I simply didn’t bother to mention the Detroit Lions ? I mean what’s the use ? Can anyone really see them winning anymore than 6 games at best this season ? Not even their front office are hopeful of them attaining that mark . But they and their long suffering fans hope that fortunes will change as to the team’s impending future. Can we all agree that the ‘curse’ of Matt Millen is more than any organization should have to bare ?

Now for the moment as we await to see what happens concerning Tomlinson and the Vikings . I can only surmise that Favre is now licking his lips and orchestrating with his agent how he can present himself to the press and his fans alike , coming across as a player who’s still undecided as to his own fate and the path that his career will take. This is one of the reasons why when I first heard the news that LaDainian Tomlinson was visiting the team , I simply reacted the way that I did. My first thoughts were oh great for LT , then it suddenly hit , oh sh_t , now that’ll mean Brett will definitely come back. As I alluded to in the title of this piece … ….. This’ll Be One More Reason For The Brett Favre Saga To Be Further Perpetuated In The Offseason ………Oh Sh_t !

Dry Hump …………..Or Not To Dry Hump That Is The Question ?

Dry Hump …………..Or Not To Dry Hump That Is The Question ?

Shakespeare’s soliloquy read ‘To Be Or Not To Be……..’

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, ’tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there’s the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law’s delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover’d country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action. – Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember’d.

The Sound That You Hear Is The Lead Balloon Falling In The City Of Brotherly Love ………

Well it has all come to this , wherein , Philadelphia 76ers’ player Allen Iverson looks as if stay with the team will be short lived. Having been given a leave of absence to deal with the health of his young daughter. It now appears that once and for all the player is prepared to finally call it quits. Why Iverson didn’t do this after his brief stint with the Detroit Pistons is beyond me ! His best years are indeed behind him and as a ‘fourteen year veteran’ of the NBA , he has little left to offer a team or organization from an athletic standpoint.

Many were obviously skeptical that the situation would last or prove to be fruitful and the case was brought home by the very fact that Iverson’s productivity with the team had become anemic to say the very least. And apart from that, he was never fully fit to begin with. He still had recurring ailments that obviously would take longer to heel, given the fact of his age and the profound battering that his frame has taken over the years. And while no one doubts his zeal for the game, it has to be said that the skill-set that we were all so often in awe of , was no longer there to be seen.

Iverson won’t return to Sixers this season

Philadeplhia- (AP) Allen Iverson’s second stint with the Philadelphia 76ers ended on Tuesday when the team announced he would not return for the rest of the NBA season.

Iverson has mostly been absent from the team for a month, returning to Atlanta to be with his family as they deal with an undisclosed illness of his 4-year-old daughter, Messiah.

Iverson, who returned as a free-agent to the 76ers in December, has not played since Feb. 20.

“After discussing the situation with Allen, we have come to the conclusion that he will not return to the Sixers for the remainder of the season, as he no longer wishes to be a distraction to the organization and teammates that he loves very deeply,” team president Ed Stefanski said. “It has been very difficult for Allen and the team to maintain any consistency as he tries to balance his career with his personal life.”

The former NBA MVP and four-time scoring champion averaged 13.8 points in 28 games this season. He started the season with the Memphis Grizzlies but played only three games before he announced a short-lived retirement.

The 34-year-old Iverson made a tearful return to Philadelphia eager to prove he wasn’t finished after disastrous stints in Detroit and Memphis. He returned to a sold-out crowd dotted with No. 3 jerseys, but he showed only flashes of his former playmaking self when he ruled the NBA as one of the best guards around and led the 76ers to the NBA finals. He scored at least 20 points six times — including a 23-point effort in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers that turned into a retro 1-on-1 duel vs. Kobe Bryant.

Iverson said at a Feb. 15 practice that it was emotionally draining to leave his family to play basketball.

He was hobbled by an arthritic left knee and constantly needed it drained. His dwindling production didn’t bother his fans — Iverson was voted an Eastern Conference All-Starter, though he did not play.

Dalembert, who played with Iverson in both stints, said A.I. was not the same player who once terrorized the opposition. But Dalembert also noticed a more reserved, humbled Iverson who just wanted to fit in instead of dominating the ball or making splashy headlines with controversial or selfish actions.

In light of this all, the Sixers are on the outside looking in , in terms of gaining a playoff berth within the Eastern Conference . They are two spots out of the eighth and last playoff berth held by the Miami Heat (29-31) , .0483 % within the NBA. With their own less than respectable record of 22-37 within the Atlantic Division . Six and a half games out the final playoff spot and there’s nothing to suggest that this Eddie Jordan coached team has what it takes to mount a serious challenge of attaining a playoff berth. And then one has to bear in mind that another seasoned vet on the Sixers’ roster has been about as omnipresent as ‘The Invisible Man’. Elton Brand coming off an, injury has seldom played this season, if at all. And when you then look down this young roster , you begin to realize that there’s very little ‘seasoned experience’ beyond the quartet of Brand, Iverson , Andre Iguodala and Samuel Dalembert . Hardly what one would expect to see of a team that you would’ve hoped to have seen in contention for postseason play in the NBA. One now has to wonder what has to be going through the minds of the members of the Sixers’ front office ?

>

We talkin’ bout practice. But ‘AI’ was ‘too dumb’ to think that it also was about the camaraderie of being with his teammates during ‘practice’ .

President & General Manager Ed Stefanski alongside Chairman & CEO Ed Snider have to be profoundly disappointed in what they’ve witnessed this season from this team. Much of this has been self inflicted in terms of poor play and the less than well conceived rationale of bringing Iverson back into the fray. Whilst on the face of it , it had that air of altruism on the part of the organization. It has in fact ended up being an unmitigated disaster from start to finish ! And much of the blame lies in the joint decision made by Jordan and Stefanski together to bring Iverson back to where his NBA career began. Admittedly, the player felt he still had something to offer the franchise but nothing tangible at all ever came out it productively, that benefited either party. And what of the fans you may ask ? Well they had the pleasure of seeing ‘a broken down old nag’ in the guise of Iverson , who still thought that ‘he was a thoroughbred’. He’d have been better off sent to a glue factory for all of the effort he has provided on court for the Sixers !

If the Sixers are to have any hope then it won’t come about this season , as that’s now all but over with. It would take a monumental effort on the part of the team to play themselves into contention. And quite frankly, I don’t believe that they possess the stomach for such a challenge. Never mind the fact that beyond the top six teams in the Eastern Conference standings , you suddenly see what a large drop-off there is in terms of the quality of play. The talent is there but it also boils down to poor execution and poor coaching. God knows, but whatever it is that David Stern has been trying to sell to the public , he and his hierarchy really do need to look at how bad the ‘bottom feeders’ have become within the NBA’s Eastern Conference !

As to Iverson’s impending future and what may well lie ahead for him. I hardly believe that he will return to the NBA , unless it’s with a team with a legitimate shot at winning an NBA title. Much like Brett Favre , Iverson will now take time to ponder of his immediate future. For fu_k’s sake do we really need another scenario where ‘a past his prime player’ mulls over his fate ? Brett is on the clock and so is Iverson. Thankfully, for the NBA’s sake none of their franchises are about to be held hostage by a ‘prima-donna’ athlete ! And what of Brett ? Who gives a flying f_ck what he now does, as the idiots within the Minnesota Vikings’ organization sits and wait on his sorry ass !
